I grew some squash last year and, to be honest, they were a bit disappointing. This year I decided I wouldn’t bother. This was also because the vegetable patch was getting quite full and these buggers take up quite a bit of room.
Then we decided to move a mound of soil in the back garden. ( I’d like to be able to tell you a hilarious story about that mound of soil. Unfortunately, there isn’t one ).
What appeared to quite a small amount of soil, was actually quite a lot when I started to bag it up ( I think we must have kept the bag from every time we’ve ever bought ).
A friend took some, and I was going to take the rest to the tip.
“Just a minute”, I thought to myself. “A bag of soil is surely just a small mobile garden?”
So, here we are. 1 courgette plant, 6 squash plants and 6 quite large potato plants that I wouldn’t have if it wasn’t for that mound of soil. All doing well.

For scale, the largest of those squash plants extends nearly 3m from sack to tip and are currently producing some nice looking fruit.
