Let’s go to Aberystwyth

We had a few days spare so decided to go to the seaside. Neither of us had ever visited Aberystwyth before so off we jolly well went. What a treat it turned out to be.

I know you’re all keen to read about the journey and, I can tell you, it was a highpoint; starting in Malvern, driving through Herefordshire to the Elan Valley in Wales and then down the mountain road through the Cambrian Mountains to Aberystwyth.

The Elan Valley was as good as ever. It’s never going to be the Lake District, but there is lots of good walking and scenery, and it saves you having to drive up the M6, it’s definitely worth a visit. Plenty of red kites to marvel at as well.

The mountain road is an experience. It’s pretty much single track all the way. We were doing it on a sunny December day. I wouldn’t want to do it in the dark, or bad weather, or summer.

We stayed in a nice pub / hotel right on the front ( the Glengower ). You can see it on those youtube videos that show the seafront being smashed up in the storms in 2017. Go have a google and come back. This is a photo of my feet taken to show how close we were to the sea.

On the first night we ate at a really good little Spanish deli / restaurant called Ultracomida. Seating is limited. There are just two big sharing tables and a bar around two sides of the room, so you really should book. That said, we didn’t. It was December and not overly busy.

Second night we ate in the Glengower. Nice beer and a couple of faggots sorted me out.
